Introduction

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati lost her earring (Manikarnika) at this very place while bathing in the Ganga. Lord Shiva then ordered a search for it. Another legend says Lord Shiva whispers the Taraka mantra (liberation mantra) into the ears of the dead at this ghat, helping them attain salvation.
Because of its link to moksha, devotees hold Manikarnika Ghat in great religious reverence. Many people travel to Varanasi in their final days, hoping their families will cremate them here and free them from the cycle of rebirth.
Daily Rituals and Cremation
Unlike other ghats in Varanasi where people bathe and perform religious ceremonies, Manikarnika Ghat serves exclusively as a cremation site. The funeral pyres burn continuously, 24 hours a day. The Dom community, who traditionally handle cremation rituals, conduct these rites with deep knowledge and respect, strictly following Hindu customs.
Local vendors sell wood for the pyres, and families choose the type and amount based on their customs and means. Even though the ghat sees constant cremation, it doesn’t carry a sorrowful atmosphere. Instead, it embodies the Hindu belief that death is a natural part of the eternal cycle of life.
