Ancient Bricks Temple

The Kalayat Ancient Brick Temple Complex is a ruined site located north of Delhi, in Kalayat town within Kaithal district, Haryana, India. It consists of several Hindu temples, including two ancient structures dating back to the 8th century. The complex is a significant stop on the 48-kos parikrama of Kurukshetra. Local tradition links the temples to the Shalivahana (Raja Sálbán) dynasty.

The name “Kalayat” is believed to be derived from “Kapilayatana,” meaning the “home of sage Kapila.” According to local folklore, there were once five brick temples situated around a sacred tank, though only two remain today. These temples, built in the Gurjara-Pratihara architectural style, date to the 8th century CE. One of the surviving temples has undergone extensive alterations over time.
