The Dakshineswar Kali Temple was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and devotee of Goddess Kali. Before embarking on a pilgrimage to Varanasi, Rani Rashmoni had a divine vision in which Goddess Kali instructed her to construct a temple on the banks of the Ganges. Obeying the vision, she purchased 20 acres of land and built this magnificent temple.
The temple’s architecture follows the Navaratna (nine-spired) style, a signature of traditional Bengali temple design. The main temple houses a large idol of Bhavatarini Kali, standing on Lord Shiva, symbolizing the divine cosmic cycle of destruction and renewal. Surrounding the main temple are twelve identical Shiva temples and a Radha-Krishna temple, enhancing the temple complex’s religious aura.

The temple gained prominence as the spiritual home of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, who served as the temple’s head priest.
