Eram (Raktatirtha)
Eram, also known as Raktatirtha Eram, holds a significant place in India’s struggle for independence. Located in the Bhadrak district of Odisha, this historic site witnessed a brutal massacre during the Quit India Movement in 1942. The British police gunned down several unarmed freedom fighters, making it one of the bloodiest incidents in Odisha’s history.
The Quit India Movement and Eram’s Role
During the Quit India Movement, the people of Odisha actively resisted British rule. In response, the colonial authorities adopted a harsh stance. On 28 September 1942, thousands of protesters gathered at Eram to demand independence. They carried the national flag and raised slogans against British oppression. Despite their peaceful approach, the British police, led by DSP Kendrick, opened fire on the unarmed crowd.
The Massacre at Eram
The brutal firing resulted in the death of more than 29 freedom fighters, while many others suffered severe injuries. Among the martyrs was Mati Jani, a brave woman who sacrificed her life for the nation. The massacre at Eram earned the site the name “Raktatirtha” (The Land of Blood Sacrifice). The attack only strengthened the people’s resolve to fight for freedom. Their sacrifices did not go in vain, as India finally gained independence in 1947.
Eram Memorial and Its Importance
To honor the martyrs, the Eram Memorial was built at the site of the massacre. Every year, thousands of visitors, including historians, students, and tourists, visit this place to pay homage. The Odisha government has recognized Eram as a historical heritage site, and efforts continue to preserve its legacy.
