Thiruvananthapuram District: An Overview

Thiruvananthapuram District is the southernmost district in Kerala, India, with its headquarters located in the city of Thiruvananthapuram. It is one of the 14 districts of Kerala and serves as the capital of the state, making it an important administrative center.

Formation and History

The district was established in 1949, and its current boundaries were formed in 1956 when four southernmost taluks were separated to create Kanyakumari district. Over the years, it has grown to become one of the most populous and urbanized regions in Kerala.

Economic Significance

Thiruvananthapuram is known as the Information Technology capital of Kerala. The district houses Technopark, the first and largest IT park in India, established in 1990. The presence of such key infrastructure has contributed significantly to the district’s economy and employment opportunities.

Population and Demographics

With a population of 3,301,427 (according to the 2011 census), Thiruvananthapuram is the second most populous district in Kerala. It also holds the highest population density in the state, with 1,509 inhabitants per square kilometer. Urban areas, including the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and several municipalities, contribute to a substantial portion of the population.

Geographic Location

Thiruvananthapuram District is situated between 8.17°N 76.41°E and 8.54°N 77.17°E. The district stretches to the southernmost point at Kaliyikkavila, which is 54 kilometers (34 miles) from Kanyakumari. It enjoys a tropical climate with a mix of coastal and inland geographical features.

Sub-Districts and Urban Areas

The district has six sub-districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Chirayinkeezhu, Neyyattinkara, Nedumangadu, Varkala, and Kattakada. The urban areas include the city of Thiruvananthapuram and municipalities such as Varkala, Neyyattinkara, Attingal, and Nedumangadu.

Rivers and Natural Resources

Thiruvananthapuram is home to three major rivers and numerous freshwater lakes and ponds. The forests cover the eastern region, while rubber cultivation takes place in the northern parts. The rest of the land is used for mixed dry-land crops, including coconut, plantain, tapioca, and rice fields.
