Construction and Location
Muhammad, the son of Umar, Governor of Kol (now Aligarh), built the Aligarh Fort in 1524 during the reign of Ibrahim Lodi. Later, Mughal and British rulers renovated and used the fort for military purposes. The fort occupies a strategic location on the Grand Trunk Road, which made it an important center for administration and defense.
Architectural Features
Builders designed Aligarh Fort with strong walls, watchtowers, and wide gateways to protect against invasions. The fort stands on a small hill and is surrounded by a deep moat, which once held water to prevent enemy attacks. Thick stone walls and high bastions gave it excellent defense capabilities.
Inside the fort, the layout includes military barracks, storage rooms, and open courtyards. Although much of the original structure has decayed over time, some sections still reflect the architectural style of the Lodi and Mughal periods. The mixture of Hindu and Islamic design elements adds cultural depth to the fort’s appearance.
Historical Importance
Aligarh Fort gained major importance during the 18th century under the French military commander Benoît de Boigne, who fortified it further while serving under the Marathas. Today, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) manages the fort and preserves it as part of its campus. While some areas are closed to the public, the fort still attracts visitors, historians, and architecture students.
