Garh Jungle, located in the Kanksa CD block near Durgapur, is a significant place in Hindu mythology, especially in the Shakta tradition. It is believed to be the site of the first Durga Puja in the world, making it an important religious and historical destination in Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal.
Mythological and Religious Significance
According to the Markandeya Purana(मार्कंडेय पुराण) and Sri Sri Chandi(which is part of Markandeya Purana), King Surath and Boisya Samadhi(वैश्य समाधि) came to the Ashram of Medhas Muni(मेधास मुनि), which was established in Garh Jungle. Here, they learned about the glory of Goddess Durga (माहात्म्य) from Medhas Muni. Inspired by this wisdom, King Surath organized the first Durga Puja in the spring season (Basanti Durga Puja) at this very site. This makes Garh Jungle one of the most sacred places in Shakta worship.
Temples and Structures
King Surath also established a temple dedicated to the Tridevi—Mahakali(महाकाली), Mahasaraswati(महासरस्वती), and Mahalakshmi(महालक्ष्मी)—in this jungle area. Today, along with these temples, there is also the Ashram of Medhas Muni and a temple of Mahakal Bhairav(महाकाल भैरव).
Historically, Garh Jungle had 16 temples, but only two remain intact:
- Shyamarupa Mandir – Dedicated to Goddess Durga.
- Shiva Mandir – Dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The site is surrounded by dense forests, ancient ruins, and a spiritual aura, attracting pilgrims and history enthusiasts.
Connection to Durga Puja
Garh Jungle is considered the birthplace of Durga Puja, which later became a grand celebration in Bengal. The rituals performed here laid the foundation for the Sharadiya Durga Puja, now one of the biggest festivals in West Bengal and beyond.
Present Condition and Tourism
Despite its historical and religious significance, Garh Jungle remains a lesser-known pilgrimage site. Devotees visit throughout the year, especially during Durga Puja and Navaratri. The natural beauty of the jungle, combined with its mythological past, makes it a serene and sacred destination. Efforts are being made to restore the temples and preserve the heritage of this ancient site.
