St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, also called Raiganj Church, is a major religious and cultural site in Chhota Parua, about 5 km from Raiganj, Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal. Dedicated to St. Joseph, the patron saint of the Raiganj Diocese, the cathedral symbolizes faith and architectural brilliance.
Historical Evolution
The church dates back to 1962, when Fr. Albinus Kujur established a mission center in Chhota Parua. Initially, it operated from a small tin structure, serving as both a chapel and living space. Seeing the need for a bigger church, Fr. Verghese Kozhikadan led its construction in 1972, completing it by 1974. Later, a larger cathedral was planned, and after three years and ten months of construction, Bishop Alphonsus D’Souza S.J. consecrated it on November 17, 2010.
