History and Geographical Overview of South Goa

South Goa is one of the two districts of the state of Goa. It is bordered by North Goa to the north, Uttara Kannada of Karnataka state to the east and south, and the Arabian Sea to the west. The Portuguese first arrived in India in 1498 and established their colony in Goa in 1510. Over the 17th and 18th centuries, they expanded their territory to cover the present boundaries of the state. In addition to Goa, the Portuguese also established colonies in Daman and Diu.

While India gained independence on 15th August 1947, Goa, Daman, and Diu remained under Portuguese control. On 19th December 1961 that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, liberated these territories through military action. Subsequently, they established Goa as a Union Territory along with Daman and Diu. Later, in 1987, Goa was granted statehood, becoming India’s 25th state. Daman and Diu were separated from Goa.
