Overview of Palwal
Palwal, the 21st district of Haryana in northern India, has its headquarters in Palwal city. Located 60 kilometers from Delhi along the Delhi-Mathura highway (NH-2), the city holds historical significance. Ancient Aryan traditions mention it as Apelava, which was part of the Pandava kingdom of Indraprastha and was later restored by King Vikramaditya.
Historical Significance and Cultural Heritage
The district gets its name from a demon named “Palwasur,” who once ruled the area during the Pandavas’ time. Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna, killed the demon. To honor this event, people celebrate the “Baldev Chhat Ka Mela” festival every year. A temple dedicated to Balarama stands near the Municipal Office Chowk. Furthermore, Palwal’s railway station holds historical significance as the place where Mahatma Gandhi was arrested for the first time. In his memory, the people built a memorial called the “Gandhi Ashram.”
