The area belonged to the Kuru dynasty, which was closely associated with the epic Mahabharata.

Medieval Period

During the medieval era, various dynasties, including the Rajputs and Mughals, ruled Rohtak. The region witnessed political turbulence, with different powers vying for control. The Mughals contributed to the area’s development by leaving behind several mosques, gardens, and architectural structures during their rule in the 16th and 17th centuries.

British Era

In the 18th century, the Marathas controlled Rohtak, and later, the British East India Company annexed it. During the British colonial period, the region underwent socio-political changes. Rohtak played a significant role in the 1857 Indian Rebellion (First War of Independence), with local forces joining the uprising against British rule.

Post-Independence

After India gained independence in 1947, the government included Rohtak in the newly-formed state of Haryana in 1966.
