Thangassery Lighthouse: An Iconic Landmark of Kollam
Thangassery Lighthouse, located in the Tangasseri area of Kollam city, Kerala, serves as one of the two lighthouses guiding the Kollam Metropolitan Area. Operated and maintained by the Cochin Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, this historic lighthouse has been in operation since 1902.
Unique Features and Architecture
The lighthouse is distinguished by its cylindrical tower adorned with striking white and red diagonal stripes. Standing at an impressive height of 41 meters (135 feet), it holds the distinction of being the second tallest lighthouse along Kerala’s coastline.

Historical Significance
Before the construction of the lighthouse, the British East India Company had established a tower with an oil lamp to guide ships. The current structure was completed in 1902, marking a new era in navigation for the region.
Structural Upgrades Over the Years
In 1930, cracks in the tower prompted the addition of masonry jacketing to ensure its stability. Over the decades, the light source underwent significant upgrades in 1932, 1940, 1962, 1967, 1990, and 1994 to enhance its functionality.
Modern Developments
In 2016, the lighthouse became more visitor-friendly with the installation of an elevator, making it easier for tourists to access and explore this historic marvel.
