
Honourable Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee is the 8th and first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal, currently serving her third consecutive term. She is the founder and leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Representing the Bhabanipur constituency, she has played a crucial role in shaping West Bengal’s political landscape. Known for her simplicity and fiery leadership, she has focused on welfare schemes, rural development, and women empowerment throughout her tenure.
Early Life and Education
Mamata Banerjee was born on January 5, 1955, in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), West Bengal. She grew up in a lower-middle-class family and faced hardships early in life, especially after the death of her father. Her strong-willed nature developed from these early struggles, and she was deeply influenced by social issues from a young age.
She completed her Bachelor’s degree in History from Jogamaya Devi College under the University of Calcutta. Later, she earned a Master’s degree in Islamic History, followed by degrees in Education and Law. Throughout her student life, Mamata remained active in student politics, laying the foundation of her future political journey.
Chief Minister of Assam
Mamata Banerjee’s political career began with the Indian National Congress in the 1980s, and she became one of the youngest MPs when elected from the Jadavpur constituency in 1984. In 1998, she founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) to fight for the interests of West Bengal.
She became the first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2011, ending the 34-year rule of the Left Front. Since then, she has been re-elected in 2016 and 2021, making her a three-term Chief Minister. Under her leadership, West Bengal has seen several welfare programs and infrastructure projects. Known for her grassroots connection and strong personality, she remains a dominant force in state politics.
