The Brahmaputra River forms the northwestern boundary of the district, while the Buridihing River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, divides the district from east to west. The Buridihing flows through Naharkatia in the east, Khowang in the middle, and finally marks the boundary between Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts. The terrain of Dibrugarh slopes gradually from the Arunachal hills in the east to the plains in the west.

Dibrugarh town, the district headquarters, stands on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. The N.F. Railway connects it to the rest of the state and the country via a broad-gauge line passing through Tinsukia. National Highway 37 runs through the district as its major roadway. The Mohanbari Airport, located 16 kilometers from Dibrugarh town, links Upper Assam, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar districts, and Arunachal Pradesh, to cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi. Additionally, the Air Force base at Chabua, 25 kilometers away, connects northeastern towns and Kolkata with air services.
Industries and Economy
The oil and tea industries drive Dibrugarh’s economy. Oil India Limited operates its headquarters in Duliajan, about 50 kilometers from Dibrugarh town. The Fertilizer Corporation of India and Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd. function at Namrup, while Assam Gas Co. and NEEPCO run near Duliajan. These industries establish Dibrugarh as an important industrial center in the region.
