Barpeta Satra is a prominent religious and cultural institution located in Barpeta, Assam. Founded in 1505 Shaka (1583 AD) by the Vaishnavite saint Madhabdev, it was initially known as Barpeta Than. Upon Madhabdev’s departure, he entrusted the management of the Satra to his disciple, Sri Mathuradasa Ata (1490-1596 AD), who was of Chandala origin. Mathuradasa became the first Satradhikar of Barpeta Satra. It was under the leadership of Burha Ata that the administration of the Satra was organized, leading to the growth of both the institution and the Barpeta region. He introduced a democratic system that continues to function effectively today.
Originally constructed as a simple kutcha (mud) house, the structure was later reinforced with large pillars and adorned with decorative wall paintings in 1878.
