Hardira Chaki

Between 1817 and 1826, Assam faced three Burmese invasions, during which the Kingdom of Assam was under Burmese control from 1821 to 1825. This period, known locally as *manor din* (Assamese: “The days/period of the Burmese”), is remembered with great fear and resentment by the people of Assam. The region suffered a significant decline in population due to both the destructive actions of the Burmese and the large-scale emigration of people, leaving the once prosperous kingdom in ruins. This marked the final stage of the Ahom kingdom’s existence. The British, who had previously been hesitant to colonize Assam, found themselves in direct confrontation with the Burmese occupying force. After the First Anglo-Burmese War, the British annexed Assam and made Manipur a subsidiary state.
