Located in the historic town of Gour, Malda, Firoz Minar is a magnificent tower built during the early 16th century by Sultan Saifuddin Firuz Shah of the Habshi dynasty. Often referred to as the “Qutub Minar of Bengal,” this five-story structure stands as a symbol of victory and architectural brilliance. Architectural Brilliance
Firoz Minar is a 26-meter (85 feet) tall tower, designed in the Tughlaq architectural style, influenced by Persian and Afghan designs. The minar has a circular base made of bricks and stone, gradually tapering towards the top. The first three stories have fluted (grooved) designs, while the upper two levels are smooth, creating a unique visual contrast. The minar originally had a spiral staircase with 73 steps leading to the top, but authorities later closed it to the public for safety reasons.

Historical Significance
Sultan Saifuddin Firuz Shah, an Abyssinian (Habshi) ruler, constructed Firoz Minar after securing victories in Bengal. He belonged to a group of African-origin rulers who briefly controlled the Bengal Sultanate. The minar served both as a symbol of triumph and a watchtower, allowing soldiers to observe the surrounding areas.
According to local legends, the sultan executed prisoners by throwing them from the top of the tower. While there is no strong historical evidence to confirm this, such stories add a mysterious aura to the monument.
